To be a chartered accountant, you obviously need good math skills. Analytical and problem-solving skills are also a prerequisite. But you must also be able to work effectively with a wide range of people, both clients and colleagues. Your role is advisory, and sometimes you will have things to say that others do not want to hear. In these situations, you must be able to present and defend your own views, and negotiate acceptable solutions when there are differences of opinion. Responsibilities The role of a chartered accountant can cover many activities, depending on the type and size of organization you work for. Generally, you provide advice on complying with tax legislation or improving the business. You put in place financial plans and controls, such as introducing policies to manage cash flow throughout the business. And finally, you monitor, review and report on financial activities, whether as part of a formal audit or in your role as adviser.
